Causes of SHPT
People with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at risk for developing secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT). In fact, of the people who have stage 3 CKD, 2 out of 5 develop SHPT. And of the people who have stage 4 CKD, 4 out of 5 develop SHPT.
When someone has a diagnosis of SHPT, stage 3 or 4 CKD, and low vitamin D levels, effective treatment for SHPT may help. Left untreated, SHPT can get worse and become more difficult to treat. Without treatment, SHPT can cause issues such as
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- Kidney stones
- Osteoporosis
- Bone fractures
